National Lottery Community Fund Supports Warwickshire’s Community Food Fleet
Warwickshire Rural Community Council (WRCC) is delighted to announce that the National Lottery Community Fund has awarded funding via it’s Awards for All programme to support the Community Food Fleet, a not-for-profit meals on wheels service operating countywide.
The Community Food Fleet, established by WRCC in August 2023, provides a vital service to residents across Warwickshire. Operating 365 days a year, the service delivers hot meals and conducts warm and well checks for clients, ensuring their safety and well-being. All deliveries are made by DBS-checked drivers, offering peace of mind to clients and their families.
The inception of the Community Food Fleet followed the closure of Apetito’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ service, which was previously subsidised by Warwickshire County Council. Since then, WRCC has stepped in to fill this crucial gap, helping residents maintain their independence and stay connected with their communities.
The National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All funding is intended to support the operation during this period of growth, following previous investment from WRCC’s reserves.
Chris Cowcher, CEO of WRCC, commented on the impact of the service: “The Community Food Fleet plays a crucial role in supporting residents across Warwickshire to live independently. Our dedicated team ensures that clients receive not only a nutritious hot meal but also a friendly face and a warm and well check. This service provides peace of mind to family and friends, knowing that their loved ones are being cared for.”
He added: “WRCC recognises the importance of this service which is why we have invested our own reserves to protect the county’s meals on wheels service. We are incredibly grateful for this funding from the National Lottery Community Fund which will support us now, as we seek to grow the customer base in communities across Warwickshire.”
