Some thoughts for rural housing week
- Between 2004 and 2014 the proportion of 25-34 year olds who were homeowners fell from 59% to 35%
- There are about 1.4 million households on social housing waiting lists across England – a 34% increase since 1997
- Nearly a fifth of women and a third of men aged 20-34 years are living at home with their parents
- Not enough homes in the right places – unaffordable in some places and unsuitable in others
- There is a shortage of ‘traditional’ materials for building – time to think about more modern methods of construction
- Public opposition – there is general dissatisfaction with what’s being planned and built
